A Salesman's Story: Three Months of Bringing Filtermist Oil Mist Collectors into the Workshop

In my tenth year in sales, the thing I fear most is not a customer pushing back a quotation saying "too expensive", but being pulled into a corner of the workshop, pointing at an idle machining center: "Xiao Li, these machines must be delivered next month. Please take care of the oil mist issue for me."
At that moment I understood: he was not just buying an oil mist collector. He was staking his delivery deadline, his reputation — and his position in the factory — on me.
What I sell is Filtermist oil mist collectors, a British brand founded in 1969 and now part of Sweden's Absolent Air Care Group. Our company, ELINK (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd., is the authorized distributor of Filtermist in China — which means sizing, installation, spare parts and after-sales service are all covered by us.
The story in brief
Last March, I visited the assembly workshop of a machining-center manufacturer in East China. Suspended oil mist was visible in the sunlight; the equipment engineer worried more about reliability than price: "If the accessory fails, it is our name that suffers."
I explained Filtermist's centrifugal impaction principle — no paper filter cartridges; oil droplets are separated by a high-speed perforated rotor and returned to the machine. A two-week trial on a running machine brought the oil mist concentration near the workstation from 3.2 mg/m³ down to 0.5 mg/m³ (illustrative values).
In the sourcing negotiation, I answered the "40% higher unit price" with a five-year total-cost comparison: no filter replacements, no downtime for cartridge changes — lower overall cost of ownership. When the management finally asked "Has this brand been used by Japanese machine-tool builders?", I answered: Filtermist has long-term OEM partnerships with global machine builders, serves customers in more than 60 countries, and in China this project is supported locally by ELINK, the authorized distributor.

The contract was signed in July; three shipments arrived between August and September, all installed and commissioned before the machine tools were delivered. Three months later, the follow-up call: zero unplanned downtime, stable concentration around 0.5 mg/m³ (illustrative values), and the end customer passed the environmental acceptance smoothly.

What we really sell
In manufacturing, the most expensive thing is never the equipment — it is the three words "nothing goes wrong". We sell clean air for everyone standing next to a machine tool.
If oil mist is troubling your workshop, talk to us. I am a salesman at ELINK Shanghai — we sell Filtermist, and we look after the clean air in your workshop.
